short answer: yes and no

A lot of photographers offer packages that include 2 photographers. Sometimes the additional photographer will be an add on. More than likely as a future bride, you have probably considered more the photographers that include a second photographer in their packages than the ones that do not. So why is a second photographer not only a desire, but a necessity?

why you don't "need" a second photographer

Chances are, the photographer you hire is very experienced and has done quite a few weddings. They understand how to pre plan so they know where to be and when, they communicate with you to figure out what is important to you, and they know how to operate in fast moving conditions. A great photographer will be able to get all the shots and maybe more so your gallery looks complete.

why you will want a second photographer

In my opinion, even though you don't "need" a second photographer, you are absolutely going to appreciate one. 2 photographers typically means twice as many pictures, more angles, and a wider variety. Think about it this way. With one photographer, they are going to have to be "absent" at certain points throughout the day. They will be with you getting ready, but when the groom arrives, they have to step out the room for a bit to make sure they are getting their reactions and getting ready. In that time, if there is a moment that happens, it is just going to have to be missed unfortunately. Sure you can redo it once they get back to the room but it wont hit the same as it did when it happened naturally. Or think about the processional when the bride is walking down the aisle. Of course the photographer will get the bride walking down and the grooms reaction, but what about grandma who is sitting front row shedding tears because she is seeing her grandbaby in the biggest moment of their life and she wasnt sure she was going to make it. Those kinds of images really only make the gallery when there is another photographer present. Or when you want to see and remember who is at your wedding and when you are looking through the gallery you see your favorite cousins posing for a funny picture that happened during cocktail hour while you were down at the ceremony taking family pics. Again, images that are only captured when you have a second photographer. Fun fact, the hero image of this blog post was taken by my second shooter, and it was one of the couples favorite images.

my opinion?

Get the package with the 2nd photographer. If they do not include one, ask how much it is to add a 2nd. Whether it is an elopement, 4 hour wedding coverage, or 8 to 10 hour wedding coverage, I really think future you will thank yourself for having that second photographer. 2 of the 3 packages I offer include 2nd photographers because I know just how important they are, especially if a couple is investing a higher budget.
